Back to school for Bertie

Tomorrow Bertie Ahern begins the greatest fight of his political life. The gathering of the Fianna Fail parliamentary party at the Slieve Russell hotel in Cavan tomorrow and Tuesday will, as usual, be the occasion for much fraternal bonhomie.

The party will formally mark the end of the summer and beginning of the new political term with a mixture of policy and pints. It's back to school time. But more importantly, it is also the beginning of a deadly serious countdown to the general election. “From here on in, that's it,” said one senior party figure. “The election is all they'll be thinking about.’' So much for governing the country....
