Health authorities were warned last year that the costs of the Fair Deal scheme for nursing home patients could not be accurately predicted and that an overrun was likely, according to a confidential report.

An audit into the scheme, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, found that some local managers in the Health Service Executive could not predict the costs they might have to meet under the scheme on a month-to-month basis.
