At least 165,000 householders face charges this week for drinking water that contains excessive levels of dangerous chemicals.
Their drinking water contains higher than permitted levels of trihalomethanes (THMs), which have been linked to diseases of the liver, kidneys, bladder and central nervous system, as well as with an increased risk of cancer. They are produced from the chlorination of water containing brown organic matter, such as peat.
