Crowd-funding was lauded as a way for people to bring their artistic projects to life, but there are accusations that the process has been abused, writes Ed Power.

Spike Lee was mad as hell. The controversial director had arrived onto a business television show to tout his latest project: an $1.25 million film he hoped to finance with donations from the public. Rather than being lionised for his vision, however, he was being grilled for his tremendous chutzpah. Given all that he had achieved, implied the anchor, was it appropriate for him to engage in virtual panhandling?
