Over several years I documented life in Britain’s flagship prison, HMP Wormwood Scrubs. The difference in attitude between inmates with nothing to do but stare at the walls and watch TV, and those taught skills – painting, sculpture, making braille books and bookbinding, was staggering.

I was left in no doubt as to the benefits of arts education in prison. No other activity has proved so instrumental in turning convicted men’s lives around....
