Browsing through Morgan O’Driscoll’s latest catalogue, the painting that stopped me in my tracks was Basil Blackshaw’s The Dust Settles, a depiction of the outcome of a cockerel war. Images of poultry seldom make me sit up and stare, but Blackshaw has used an exquisite palette of creamy, apricot-tinged yellows backing the red and black birds and the effect is mesmerising.
