Argentinian Cardinal becomes Pope Francis

The new pope appeared on the balcony above St Peter's Square in white robes; his first words were "Buona sera" (Good evening).

The Catholic Church's new Pope has been named as Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina.

A Jesuit, he has taken the name of Pope Francis I.

His election was announced on a balcony above a packed St Peter's Square in Rome, thronged by people who braved the rain to hear the words: "Habemus Papam" (We have a pope).
