Whether we like it or not, university rankings do matter, but how much influence they have is very difficult to quantify, writes John O'Hagan.
The university sector was back in the news last week in relation to a leaked report commissioned by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), which recommended radical structural change. The influential Times Higher Education (THE) rankings of world universities are due on Wednesday.
