Arab-Irish: Trade can grow further

Joe Geoghegan is confident that the trade relationship between this country and the Arab world is primed to expand significantly in the coming years. Alex Meehan reports.

To the casual observer, Taoiseach Enda Kenny's recent decision to head a trade mission to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates might seem a little random.

According to the Central Statistics Office, the Arab markets represent Ireland's largest export region outside Europe and North America. Recently-published CSO figures valued Arab-Irish trade with the Middle East at more than €4 billion in 2013, with a trade surplus in Ireland's favour of €1.25 billion.
