Good news! For some candidates, anyway. Boffins have discovered that "competent-looking" candidates in elections have a distinct advantage over candidates who look "less competent", with voters unconsciously favouring the more competent-looking candidates by some 13 per cent.

Furthermore, when researchers used this model to predict the last round of elections in the US, they were right about 70 per cent of the time.

So what does looking competent entail? Well, appearing completely slack-jawed, vacant or otherwise mentally...
