Rebel Fianna Fáil backbenchers are discussing putting down a motion of no confidence in Brian Cowen’s leadership during the Christmas break, with the intention of electing a new leader for a possible spring election.

Fine Gael and the Labour Party are also in discussions on tabling a Dáil motion of no confidence in Cowen on Tuesday, following the arrival of the International Monetary Fund in Ireland.
