The three accused sat waiting in the dock, side by side, for the tenth week. Sean FitzPatrick and Pat Whelan shared a joke. A bottle of Lucozade rested in front of FitzPatrick. Willie McAteer maintained something of a distance, seeming to speak when spoken to.

The crowds had returned to court number 19, many sensed, perhaps rightly, that it was nearing its end.
