The sequester is a dull name for a dramatic package of spending cuts that are set to take effect from Friday.

American politicians and the US media have cried wolf many times on fiscal issues in the recent past. Now, though, there really is a wolf - but large swathes of the American public, if the polling is to be believed, either do not know or do not care.
