The previous day we'd passed England's Land's End and set a course northwest towards the east coast of Ireland. In the favourable breeze Silver Dove kept up a steady five knots as we sailed through the darkness of the short July night and into a misty dawn. I'd been alone on watch for six hours and there were many more to go before we reached Dublin.
