Back in the 1990s, when quite a bit of breath was left in the exoskeleton of alternative rock, the British music weeklies used to throw around a phrase to describe the less exciting guitar fodder that was in circulation at the time. Indie schmindie, they called it, usually before (correctly) going on to recommend a somewhat more outré act like the Young Gods or the Flaming Lips instead.
