The slow fragmentation of mainstream pop music during the past ten years has, among other things, made it entirely possible to be a big(gish) star in the field with 97 per cent of the population being unaware you even exist, let alone what you look like.

The strangely-named Robin Thicke personifies this trend. He's sold a lot of records, but could probably walk down Grafton Street without suffering engulfment by a horde of teen girls....
