New rules that will curtail access to a state support for distressed homeowners could exacerbate the mortgage debt crisis by pushing more cash-strapped borrowers into arrears, experts have warned.

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has signed a commencement order allowing for a change to the eligibility criteria for the Mortgage Interest Supplement. The new rules, which apply since last week, mean struggling borrowers must wait longer to access the state support.
