AIB has set a deadline of next year for restructuring loans for struggling small and medium businesses (SMEs) in a move that will provide a major fillip to heavily indebted businesses.

David Duffy, chief executive of the bank, told a meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party last week that the lender hoped to complete the restructuring of its SME portfolio by the end of next year.
