Ahern gains e60,000 by quitting now

Former taoiseach Bertie Ahern will be €60,000 a year better off by retiring now rather than returning as a TD.

Former taoiseach Bertie Ahern will be €60,000 a year better off by retiring now rather than returning as a TD.

The difference is due to an overhaul of the pension system and loss of TD increments for deputies returned to the next Dáil, according to figures obtained from the Department of Finance. Pension entitlements claimed before the next election will be based on pre January 1, 2010 cuts to politicians’ salaries.
