High street opticians have welcomed new rules which remove restrictions on advertising.

The rules, published last week by the Opticians Board, implement recommendations by the Competition Authority in its 2006 report on the optometrists’ profession.

The Opticians Act previously banned canvassing and comparative advertising. The 1956 act said that optometrists may not canvass for business on their own behalf or on behalf of any other person or company.
