I awake to Pacific waves crashing upon white sand shore, knowing the day is sunny and hot and the sea invitingly warm. Swigging tap water, which is perfectly safe to drink throughout most of Costa Rica, I don my swimsuit and head to the beach.

The damp sand is gold and heavy green fronds from the overhanging coconut palms rustle in the breeze, as reddish blue-clawed crabs scuttle into their holes just beyond the frothy...
