Abroad: Calm amid the chaos

Though it may be less heralded than its more famous Balearic sister isles, the well-kept island of Menorca has much to recommend it, writes Mark Collins.

Mahón, the capital of Menorca, boasts the deepest natural harbour in the world after Sydney.

A yearning for a Mediterranean break away from the rigours of day-to-day life took us to a quaint farmhouse on Menorca's east coast. Located near Mahón, the island's capital, the villa was a large two-storey affair. It was cleverly separated into three self-contained sleeping areas around a large open-plan sitting room. Ours was a big group, but there was plenty of room to accommodate nine guests comfortably.
