Abortion: The sound and the fury

The tortuous passage of the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill finally reached its conclusion last week, amid angry demonstrations and bizarre scenes, writes Pat Leahy.

The pro-life activists began gathering at the gates of Leinster House last Tuesday evening in preparation for the following day's votes. They were still there more than 24 hours later, as the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill continued its slow, tortuous passage through the Dáil.

By now, they had been joined by pro-choice demonstrators. "Get your rosaries off our ovaries!" the pro-choice group chanted. Separated by a half-line of gardaí, the pro-lifers chanted...
