The key dates in Irish abortion law

13th July, 2013
In 1997, Fianna Fail taoiseach Bertie Ahern indicates that his government will issue a green paper on abortion.

1861: Offences against the Person Act outlaws abortion in Britain and Ireland.

**1922:** Offences against the Person Act is brought into Irish law by the Free State Constitution.

**1937:** Article 40.3.2 of the Constitution of Ireland says: "The State shall, in particular, by its laws protect as best it may from unjust attack and, in the case of injustice done, vindicate the life, person, good name and property rights of every citizen."
