The amazement and incomprehension from the political system which has greeted Lucinda Creighton's vote against her government's abortion legislation and her subsequent resignation as a junior minister is a slightly depressing commentary on our political system. That someone should be willing to sacrifice his or her career for a deeply-held political or personal belief is apparently difficult for the Irish political system to understand. Elsewhere, this is not considered all that remarkable.
