A childhood spent eating liver, heart and pretty much every other type of offal you can think of has left me fairly unflappable when it comes to trying new and unusual foods.

But as I examine the contents of the seafood platter I've just been served in Mariscos & Petiscos, a long-established restaurant in the small village of Cabanas in the eastern Algarve, I'm beginning to wonder if this time I've literally bitten off more...
