Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty was a Kerryman with a big heart. During World War II, he used his position in the Roman Curia to save around 6,500 Allied soldiers and Jews from the gas chambers. His courageous actions led to him being dubbed the 'Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican' and were later celebrated in a film with Gregory Peck in the lead role.
