A long way from hope

Barack Obama came to power promising change, but many of his followers are disappointed in just how little difference he seems to have made as president of the US, writes Niall Stanage.

Has US president Barack Obama been a letdown? It is a question that has hung around the shoulders of America's 44th leader for almost all his tenure in the Oval Office.

During his epic 2008 campaign, Obama portrayed himself as a more elevated figure than his main opponent in the Democratic party, Hillary Clinton - and as someone who could offer a complete break from the political stances represented by his predecessor, George W Bush.
