‘C’est absurd,” was 94-year-old Eileen Gray’s remark to her biographer Peter Adam when, after decades in obscurity, Yves Saint Laurent’s purchase of her Dragon Chair in 1972 led to escalating prices for her work and a major London exhibition.

When YSL died in 2008, the Dragon chair sold at auction for $28 million.
