Mega prices achieved for art at auction grab the headlines, but the artist starving in the garret is still with us. US art economist Don Thomson reckons that, of the 80,000 artists working out of London and New York, as few as 500 are making a decent living.

Visual Artists Ireland estimates there are approximately 4,500 artists working in Ireland. Their latest survey shows that 80 per cent of them earn less than €10,000 a year.
