Genoa combines crusty mariner, Renaissance opulence, 19th century elegance and 21st century style

Genoa's power as a port allowed it to grow from a Renaissance jewel into a bastion of 19th century elegance, and its inimitable style is still evident today, writes Conor Power.

Genoa is a paradox of a city. It is Italy's most important port and is part of the industrialised north, yet a stroll through its streets can often feel closer to Marrakesh than to Milan. I met a neighbour who recently came back from visiting Genoa and who said that they didn't like it; that it was ''dangerous and seedy.
