Chanel reveals new face of signature men’s fragrance

French fashion house have waited over a year to replace deceased Gaspard Ulliel who previously fronted the campaigns

The 27-year-old Chalamet has been named as one of the actors of his generation

Chanel has announced that the French-American actor Timothée Chalamet is the new face of their signature men’s fragrance Bleu de Chanel. The 27-year-old actor replaces the original face of the fragrance, French actor Gaspard Ulliel who fronted the campaigns for twelve years before he was tragically killed in a skiing accident in Rosière resort in Savoie, France in January 2022 at the age of 37.

Chalamet first rose to fame with his revelatory performance in Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 coming-of-age film Call Me by Your Name, earning him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Alongside supporting roles in Greta Gerwig's films Lady Bird in 2017 and Little Women in 2019, Chalamet also took on starring roles as drug addict Nic Sheff in the biographical drama Beautiful Boy (2018), Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's science fiction film Dune (2021), and a young cannibal in Guadagnino's romantic horror film Bones and All (2022), which he also produced.

Chalamet has been shot by Mario Sorrenti for the new campaign

In 2018, he appeared in Forbes's 30 Under 30 Hollywood & Entertainment list while his fashion credentials have continued to grow, serving as one of the co-chairs of the 2021 Met Gala alongside Billie Eilish while in September 2021, Chalamet became a brand ambassador for Cartier. At the 94th Academy Awards, Chalamet wore a sequined Louis Vuitton jacket from Nicolas Ghesquière's womenswear collection without a shirt which W magazine declared at the time as having "rewritten the gentleman's Oscar dress code for good". In 2022, Chalamet appeared on the cover of the October print edition of British Vogue, becoming the first solo male to do so in the magazine's history.

Chanel said of the actor, “Timothée Chalamet personifies the visionary and edgy spirit of the next chapter of Bleu De Chanel: a man who does not limit himself to the ordinary boundaries life sets and looks beyond what is visible.” The advertising campaign starring Chalamet has been shot by Mario Sorrenti and will be released in June 2023, followed by the release of the campaign film, directed by Martin Scorsese, who also shot the original Blue de Chanel campaign, in the autumn.
