Questions raised over McGuinness’s suitability for top financial portfolio

The Fine Gael MEP will be quizzed on her expertise in fiscal matters and Ireland’s tax policies, while some left-wing MEPs have raised issues over her suitability for the post

Mairead McGuinness is expected to be comfortably approved by the committees’ members, particularly given that she was elected as first vice-president of the parliament last year with 618 votes out of 702 that were cast

Mairead McGuinness is due to face tough questioning during her ratification hearing to become Ireland’s next European Commissioner after a number of left-wing MEPs raised queries about her suitability for the financial services portfolio.

The European Parliament’s Conference of Committee Chairs (CCC) meets tomorrow to decide on how McGuinness’s ratification process will proceed, including which committees will be involved in questioning her and when.
