Betting machine prize increases to get green light thanks to Fianna Fáil support

Despite fears raised over gambling addiction levels, the maximum payout is to rise 800-fold

Fianna Fáil has decided to support the government’s 800-fold increase in betting machine payouts.

Under the gambling bill, the maximum bet on the machines will be raised from 3 cent to €5 and the maximum payout will increase from 63 cent to €500. While the low limits are over 60 years old and have been widely flouted, the new payout figures still represent an increase almost 800 times the original limit.
