The Dáil recess should have been an opportunity for the government to distance itself from the litany of controversies it has been at the centre of since it was formed.

The decision by Dara Calleary, the Agriculture Minister, and several other members of the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael parliamentary parties to attend the Oireachtas Golf Society dinner in Clifden put paid to that idea, however.
