The NI local elections should have acted as a real spur for change. They didn't.

This was a golden opportunity for the outpouring of grief and anger at Lyra McKee's death to upend the status quo, instead the DUP and Sinn Féin remain the two largest parties with only a small dip in their support

Even the first-time election for the DUP of Alice Bennington, an openly gay woman hasn’t shifted the dial. Arlene Foster (pictured) congratulated her on her election as a politician supporting DUP principles, but stated clearly that the party’s policy on marriage remains the same and that ‘marriage is between a man and a woman.’

Sara Canning bared her heart and her head this week when she gave her first interview since the murder of her partner Lyra McKee. Poignantly for Louise, the Channel 4 interview took place on the day both women should have been in New York’s Central Park, getting engaged to be married. Not just grieving for ‘the love of her life’ Sara finds herself thrust instead into the centre of Northern Ireland’s latest political manoeuvrings....
