The path for taoisigh on their way to negotiate deals in Brussels is a well-trodden one. Albert Reynolds was able to return in triumph with €8 billion of EU structural funding in 1992. Brian Cowen had a less auspicious journey to renegotiate parts of the Lisbon Treaty in 2008 after it had been rejected by the electorate in a referendum.

And Enda Kenny himself spent much of the last five years in Brussels negotiating on the bailout...
