RTÉ needs to open new channels with government

The national broadcaster can’t keep fulfilling the same responsibilities with less money, so a better relationship with Fine Gael is key

RTÉ directors general are rare birds. A new one is sighted about every seven years. They are generally internal older appointees who serve their term before retiring on generous pensions. Delegates at next month’s International Broadcasting Conference in Amsterdam will have a very unusual sight indeed. Not one, but two directors general will grace the stage to debate the future of public service broadcasting.
