Let’s be practical: romantic Irish notions of cailíns at the crossroads, donkeys in every field and a post office in every village do not exist, because we no longer live our lives in this way
Government departments routinely send out county lists, normally with details of grants or funding for sports centres, health centres, roads, schools. They are always awaited with great anticipation by local TDs who will make the best out of the list, even when the list is the opposite of what they hoped.
If not, they had to be first out with indignation and condemnation, although it’s quite likely that hardly any of the complaining TDs ever...
