The paradox of Portlaoise highlights the lack of accountability, not only within the health service, but within the government as well

Portlaoise Hospital continues to provide a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week emergency service for patients

There have been umpteen promises and commitments from successive ministers for health about creating greater accountability in the health service.

A succession of Fine Gael ministers for health, including Simon Harris and Leo Varadkar, have trotted out various initiatives and recycled commitments that have amounted to little more than empty rhetoric.

There is little accountability within the health service and even less in government.
