The Quiet Man: narrow cliches don’t do justice to the Irish people, at home or abroad

It’s something of a daily chore, pronouncing my surname. Invariably, to English eyes, it reads: ‘Meagre’ or ‘Meay-gher’. Occasionally, an Irish voice in a doctor’s surgery or wherever will get it right first time, but it’s a rarity. The sheer number of people called ‘Maher’ across Britain is testament to how many of my clan have clearly given up the ghost.
