The visit of Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau to Ireland and the warmth that it generated, along with the forthcoming trade talks between the US and Britain on July 23, are reminders that this part of the world is an integral component of the community of Anglophone north Atlantic nations.

Our people, and those in our neighbouring island, have traditionally looked west to the US and Canada, rather than east, in terms of our overseas links....
