Anti-paedophile groups handing out a new kind of justice

Last week, a disturbing video emerged of RTÉ Sport producer Kieran Creaven appeared in a sting operation by an anti-paedophile group in Leeds. But are such activities on solid legal ground in Ireland?

Back in 2004, US television premiered a new type of hidden camera reality show, To Catch A Predator. Volunteers from a group called Perverted Justice worked alongside police, impersonating underage boys and girls online and luring “wannabe peds” (paedophiles) to a rendezvous point. Once there, the “predator” was confronted by NBC network host Chris Hansen while armed police swarmed in for a dramatic gunpoint arrest.
