When my sister’s friend arrived at our house with a crate of Prince tapes in the 1990s, I dutifully copied them all. For that, and Prince’s music ever since, I am eternally grateful

I’ll always remember the day the tapes arrived. The crate that contained them was heavy; so heavy that, as my sister’s friend shouldered it into the hallway of our home, he had to quickly put his offering down at my feet. “It’s all my Prince tapes,” he said, his face beaming. “You can listen to them all.”
