In 2020, the most wonderful time of the year just might also be the most dangerous. A bumper month of business for beleaguered gastropubs, restaurants and hotels is under way, as people eagerly grasp the opportunity to socialise.

Most restaurants are reporting a flurry of bookings that has seen available tables in short supply for all of December, while retailers are reporting a booming trade.
