Consultants will seek interest payments of up to 8 per cent per year on the back pay they claim is due to them, which could add tens of millions to the state’s potential €300 million bill.

An estimated 2,000 hospital consultants were affected by the decision to withhold salary increases due to hospital consultants in 2009 under the terms of the 2008 consultant contract.
