Varadkar ‘misled’ Oireachtas over empty hospital consultant posts
Opposition says health minister "ill-informed, uninterested, and downright lazy"
Minister for Health Leo Varadkar gave inaccurate information that underplayed the extent of hospital consultant vacancies, opposition parties have charged.
Varadkar, who appeared before the Oireachtas health committee last week, said there were 170 vacancies across the country, but that the posts were almost all filled by locum doctors.
The HSE has clarified that 171 posts are completely unfilled with any doctor, permanent or otherwise.
