Medicines for Ireland claims policies on biosimilar products prevent taxpayers from gaining €25 million in savings on vital medicines
In a recent examination of hospital costs, the Department of Public Expenditure highlighted a €115 million increase in spending on medicines between 2014 and 2017.
Public hospitals spent €451 million on medicines in 2017 – up from €336 million in 2014.
Hospital expenditure only represents a fraction of the HSE’s total bill on medicines, as the bulk of expenditure emanates from medicines that are dispensed from pharmacies under various state drug schemes.
