Our waiting lists are a disgrace
The government should lie back and think of England if it wants to improve hospital treatment statistics here
England has a population of 53 million. Official figures show 178 patients waited longer than 12 months for non-emergency hospital treatment there in March.
Ireland has a population of 4.5 million. The latest official figures show 9,180 patients were waiting longer than 12 months for treatment.
The National Health Service (NHS) statistics for March were not a statistical blip. Over the past year there have never been more than 324 patients waiting longer than one year for treatment in England.
