The Sunday Business Post reported at the weekend that hospitals are to begin informing thousands of their former inpatients that they were exposed to a dangerous and difficult-to-treat superbug.

An estimated 5,000 former patients will receive letters telling them that they were identified as ‘contacts’ of patients who were colonised by an antibiotic-resistant superbug called CPE. But what is CPE and how does it spread?
